Ma's stay in St. Kitts and Nevis casts spotlight on solar power

Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, Aug. 20 (CNA) Republic of China President Ma Ying-jeou visited a solar power plant being built by a Taiwanese company in St. Kitts and Nevis on Monday to highlight the two countries' cooperation in renewable energies.

The president, on the last stop of his five-nation diplomatic tour, praised the plant that is being jointly funded by the two governments and built by Taoyuan-based SpeedTech Energy Co.

St Maarten Sees Increase In North America Passenger Arrivals

The friendly island of St. Maarten continues to prove itself as a preferred destination for travelers with a 12.1% increase in Canadian passenger traffic during the first six months of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.  

The island is also the fastest growing Caribbean destination, according to a study done by Expedia. The figures show that St. Maarten has held its own despite the economic and financial challenges faced by nations around the globe. Compared to 297,179 arrivals from January - June 2012, the Princess Juliana International Airport saw an increase to 300,092 arrivals during the first half of 2013.

T&T to host ACS tourism talks

T&T to host ACS tourism talks

Just days after hosting the Caricom Heads of Government Summit, T&T will be the venue for another regional gathering.  On July 16 and 17, the ACS Secretariat in Port-of-Spain will host the 24th Meeting of the Special Committee on Sustainable Tourism (SCST-24) at its headquarters. High-level officials and tourism authorities will convene to discuss matters pertaining to the efforts of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) in relation to the sustainable development of tourism in the Greater Caribbean. This meeting follows the Fifth Summit of the heads of states and/or governments of the ACS, which was held in Petion-ville, Republic of Haiti, on April 26.

With the input of the ACS countries, the SCST-24 meeting plans to revitalise the work programme of the ACS Directorate of Sustainable Tourism, as well as address and decide on issues and concerns affecting the regional tourism industry. The ACS directorate additionally aims to inform the meeting of its projects and activities, highlighting advances made and new initiatives, which seek to contribute to and promote the practice of sustainable tourism in the region.

Lock gates for Panama Canal begin long haul from Italy

The shipment of the first four lock gates for the third set of locks for the Panama Canal has begun in Italy. They are expected to arrive in Panama by the end of August.

Boarding operations began from Cimolai SpA, in San Giorgio de Nogaro, from where the gates will move to the port of Trieste. They are expected to set sail for Panama in late July.

Each gate will be shipped and transported in individual barges from Nogaro to the port of Trieste where they will be placed in a heavy lift vessel.
